Synchrony Venture Management Publishes Ground Breaking White Paper, "Redefining the CVC Paradigm: An Empirical Framework for Screening, Selecting & Measuring Strategic Investments"

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Feb 8, 2012) - Synchrony Venture Management introduced the publication of their white paper entitled "Redefining the CVC Paradigm: An Empirical Framework for Screening, Selecting & Measuring Strategic Investments" today in a special session at the 14th Annual Corporate Venturing & Innovation Partnering Conference hosted by IBF in Newport Beach, California.

The white paper is co-authored by Adam Caper, Synchrony's Founder & Managing Director, and Iain Cooper, who heads up Schlumberger Limited's strategic investment program, the "Early-Phase Technology Initiative" (EPTI). Synchrony has been instrumental in the development of this highly successful program over the three year partnership between the two firms.

This white paper presents Synchrony's unique, patent-pending Innovation Capital(SM) system, which provides its corporate clients with an empirical framework to screen, select, and track strategic investments on multiple levels. Strategic investing has become a key tool for large firms to acquire competitive advantage-conferring capabilities by partnering with entrepreneurial innovators.

Using the Innovation Capital toolkit & methodology, Synchrony clients can:

  • Objectively prioritize the importance of technology areas in terms of their potential to improve via innovation
  • Establish an empirical, objective means of targeting & evaluating potential investments
  • Analytically rank different potential opportunities, regardless of the different measures used to describe their potential to improve strategic priorities
  • Convert investment screening & evaluation from a subjective, qualitative, idiosyncratic, process to a streamlined, measured, repeatable & scalable function which has the same reliability and quality standards as any other corporate initiative.

Simply put, the Innovation Capital system allows a firm's corporate venture capital activities to mature from a difficult-to-measure and subjective process to one which is a clearly understood and highly sustainable contributor to creating value.
