Syscan Marks Milestone Anniversary of ATQ

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 17, 2006) - Syscan International Inc. (TSX VENTURE:SYA) has congratulated the team at Agri-Tracabilite Quebec (ATQ) on its fifth anniversary which was celebrated on Thursday, October 12 at Longueuil (Quebec), together with farm producers, industry professionals and business partners including Syscan. ATQ, which was formed in September 2001, is a partnership between farm producers and the Quebec government, with the view to planning and operating an ongoing identification and traceability system for agricultural produce and livestock. Syscan's participation with ATQ is integral to its development of the identification, monitoring and traceability aspects of the food chain.

Mr. Richard Maheu, Chair of the ATQ Board of Directors and of the Federation de l'UPA Outaouais-Laurentides, stressed that "Five years into our undertaking, the word 'traceability' is no longer a new term; it is now an integral part of our vocabulary and also and above all, of the daily management strategies of close to 19,000 farm producers in Quebec. I believe that we can now take credit for having been pioneers in the domain. The many animal health crises that have shaken the Canadian and North American farm industry over the past three years have shown that we were right to persevere and to have set up this system."

The celebration was marked by a review of the highlights of the
history of the organization and of the bases of the Quebec
traceability system:

- the identification of animals at birth;
- the identification of all Quebec agricultural sites through which
animals pass;
- the recording of all inter-site animal movement; and lastly,
- a unique database that centralizes information on all the species
covered by the regulations.

The milestones achieved by Agri-tracabilite Quebec's 5th anniversary could not have taken place without the contribution of its partners. Mr. Axel Striefler, President of Syscan International, an ATQ gold partner said, "Over the last several years, Syscan has worked in close partnership with ATQ on what is one of the most important mandates ever in Quebec agriculture. We believe that thanks to the leadership and foresight of the Ministere de l'Agriculture, des Pecheries et de l'Alimentation du Quebec (MAPAQ), the Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) and ATQ, the forthcoming full integration of Syscan's advanced RFID (radio frequency identification) tracking and tracing technology at both the farm and the transport levels will place Quebec's agricultural industry at the forefront of the international community. From Syscan's perspective, the last several years have been a most challenging, exciting and industrious time. I would like to assure the people of this Province that our team at Syscan shares a common vision with ATQ; and that is to contribute as much as we can to the successful implementation of RFID-enabled agricultural traceability throughout Quebec."

Mr. Maheu added, "The high standards of food safety and cleanliness that characterize the Quebec agro-food industry are now, thanks to the implementation of this system of identification and traceability, matched by an effective management tool that will help maintain its excellent reputation with respect to the quality of its farm produce."

The eventual implementation of ATQ's innovations across the province are expected to significantly guard consumers against the potentially devastating tolls that can be caused by outbreaks of food chain contaminations such as botulism, e-coli and BSE. Syscan's sophisticated RFID technology collects tracking and tracing data in real-time so that immediate steps can be taken to eliminate potentially hazardous goods from entering the food chain at any point from farm to fork.

Syscan also provides RFID solutions tailored to the pharmaceutical and military sectors as well as the grocery and restaurant industries.

In other corporate news, the Company advised that it will be releasing its year end (June 30) financial results during the last week of October; as well as the grant of 250,000 options at $0.25 per share to officers and employees.

Agri-Tracabilite Quebec is an independent not-for profit organization created in September 2001 to develop and set up ongoing product ID and traceability systems covering both livestock and food produce. Its Board of Directors is made up of representatives of the Union des producteurs agricoles, of the Ministere de l'Agriculture, des Pecheries et de l'Alimentation du Quebec, and of the Financiere Agricole du Quebec. The traceability of livestock between the farm and the slaughterhouse has been implemented since June 2002 in the dairy cattle and beef cattle sectors, and since December 2004 in the ovine sector (lambs and sheep). ATQ is also working on a number of other traceability projects, including the cervidae sector (wapitis, elks, red deer), the transportation of livestock, and the poultry and egg marketing sector.
