Sysomos Co-Founder Nick Koudas Honoured as Inventor of the Year
University of Toronto Recognizes Innovative Platform for Real-Time Monitoring of Social Media
TORONTO--(Marketwire - March 10, 2011) - Sysomos President and Co-founder Dr. Nick Koudas was honoured at the University of Toronto's inaugural "Inventor of the Year" awards on March 7, 2011 and, together with eight of his peers, was recognized for inventions with a significant level of uniqueness, global impact and commercial appeal. Launched by the University's Innovations and Partnerships Office (IPO), the awards recognize inventors or teams of inventors from the University who have made a significant contribution to its innovation agenda.
The event recognized accomplishments in Biomedical and Life Sciences, Engineering and Physical Sciences, and the category in which Koudas was honored, Information and Computer Technology/Social Sciences and Humanities. Dr. Koudas, along with co-inventor Nilesh Bansal, developed a tool to enable real-time monitoring of social media: blogs, social networks and micro-blogging services, forums, video sites and media sources via sophisticated data mining and content aggregation technology.
"The University of Toronto has a rich history of excellence in research and innovation, and the 'Inventor of the Year' awards recognize the formidable contributions that our faculty members have made not only to the University, but also by sharing that excellence with the world," said Professor Peter Lewis, IPO's acting assistant vice-president and University of Toronto's associate vice-president (research). "The exceptional work done by Dr. Koudas and all of this year's award winners is a testament to the power of creation, collaboration and leadership."
Dr. Koudas is a professor at the University of Toronto's Department of Computer & Mathematical Sciences. He holds more than 20 patents, and has published more than 100 research publications in the areas of database systems, text analytics, and information mining. Sysomos, a Greek word for "everything together," emerged from an advanced research project started at the University in 2005, which led to the creation of a core content aggregation and analysis engine in May 2006. The startup grew at an enviable rate within two years of its founding and quickly attracted high-profile clients in Canada and around the world. In July 2010, Sysomos was acquired by Marketwire, with flagship offerings that include:
- Media Analysis Platform (MAP), an in-depth research tool that offers the ability to analyze and understand social media conversations; and
- Heartbeat, a real-time monitoring and measurement tool that provides constantly updated snapshots of social media conversations.
"Commitment to innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit are at the heart of Sysomos," explains President and CEO of Marketwire Michael Nowlan. "Nick's achievements and recognition stand as a true testament to his continued dedication to maximizing technological and sociological changes in communication and information-sharing to redefine and advance the way the world communicates. I congratulate each of the individuals on their tremendous accomplishments."
