Tampa Area Libraries Offer 24/7 Audio Books "To Go"

Digital Audio Books Now Available for Download From Your Library

TAMPA, FL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 29, 2005 -- Take Dr. Phil to the beach, Nora Roberts to the health club, or Dave Barry to work. Digital audio books by these authors and hundreds more are now available for free download to your home computer through a new service from the Tampa Bay Library Consortium. With the new digital library, you can check out and transfer audio books directly to your PC, compatible MP3/WMA audio players, or burn titles to a CD for use in your car, boat, or anywhere!

To access the "audio books to go," follow a link at a participating library's website or logon to the collection directly by visiting

This new service is available to those who hold valid library cards to Clearwater Public Library, East Lake Community Library; Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative; Largo Public Library; Manatee Community College Library; Palm Harbor Library; Pasco County Public Library System; Safety Harbor Public Library and St. Petersburg Public Library System.

From the convenience of your personal computer, you can browse and choose from 300 audio book titles in nearly every genre from popular fiction to self-help, and romance to young adult.

Accessing materials is similar to shopping online; pick the titles that you like, enter your library card and then download the materials. Once the free Media Player is installed, downloading an entire book can take as little as 15 minutes. You can borrow as many as four audio books at a time and there's no need to return them! Once the seven-day lending period is over the titles are automatically checked back in, so there are no late fees. Technology for the new service is provided through OverDrive, the national leader in downloadable media for libraries.

The Digital Book Catalog is a joint project of the participating libraries and the Tampa Bay Library Consortium (TBLC), which currently has 93 member libraries. Together these libraries serve more than 3.8 million Floridians (approximately 30% of Florida's total population) in 12 counties in west central Florida. The counties served are Citrus, DeSoto, Hardee, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Manatee, Okeechobee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota.
