The improved optical design of 21 elements in 13 groups uses three low-dispersion elements to reduce axial and transverse chromatic aberrations. Also, to limit the impact of flare and ghosting, the SP 150-600mm utilizes Extended Bandwidth and Angular-Dependency (eBAND) and Broad-Band Anti-Reflection (BBAR) Coatings. The super-telephoto zoom even has an improved minimum object distance of 7.2'. Furthermore, a water- and oil-resistant fluorine coating on the front element makes it easier to clean.

Operation of the lens is fast and quiet with an Ultrasonic Silent Drive AF motor, which now provides improved speed and accuracy. The weather-resistant lens also incorporates Vibration Compensation on the Nikon and Canon versions, which can compensate for up to 4.5 stops of camera shake. An added feature of this model is the Flex Zoom Lock, which allows shooters to lock the zoom at any position by sliding the zoom ring. In order to enhance utility, the lens offers an Arca-type compatible tripod collar.
