Tangerine Wellness Expands Program at A. O. Smith

A. O. Smith Employees Can't Wait to Lose More Weight

BOSTON, MA and MILWAUKEE, WI--(Marketwire - March 18, 2008) - Tangerine Wellness, the first incentive-based corporate wellness program that reduces the cost of healthcare for employers, has expanded its program with A. O. Smith Corporation (NYSE: AOS), one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of residential and commercial water heating equipment and electric motors, to an additional two U.S. locations.

The Tangerine Wellness program, which is a non-prescriptive approach to weight-loss and health improvement, focuses on the idea that not just one wellness program will work for everyone. Using Tangerine, employees earn cash and other rewards for losing weight. Employers lower healthcare costs and improve morale and productivity through Tangerine's customized, fully outsourced program that includes a suite of online and offline services. By offering cumulative rewards, and allowing participants to track their results online, Tangerine keeps the program interesting and easy for its participants.

The Tangerine Wellness program began on March 10 for employees at A. O. Smith Water Products Company in Ashland City, Tenn., and at A. O. Smith Electrical Products Company in Tipp City, Ohio. Meanwhile, employees at A. O. Smith's corporate headquarters in Milwaukee, Wis., and at its distribution center in LaVergne, Tenn., continue to lose weight and get paid using the Tangerine Wellness program.

"Initially we planned to roll out the Tangerine Wellness program to more employees after a six-month pilot, but it did not take that long for us to realize that we were onto something," according to Mark Petrarca, senior vice president human resources and public affairs. "After three months, employees lost an average of 4.6 pounds each, and word spread about the program companywide. There was a lot of enthusiasm as other plants inquired about getting onboard. It was going so well we decided to expand the program sooner."

Initially, A. O. Smith, which never had a formal wellness program before, was concerned about participation in the program but within the first three months, their concerns vanished with more than 60 percent participation. Employees were shedding pounds, earning rewards and talking about it.

"Tangerine has a simple program that doesn't require human resources time. It practically manages itself," said Petrarca. "We post Tangerine's weekly reports on the bulletin boards at each participating location so that employees can follow the results of the program."

Using team competitions, with fun names like "Healthy Hindquarters" and "Flab2Fab," further encouraged employees to participate and rally around the Tangerine Wellness program. Tangerine Wellness also provided daily email reminders with weight-loss tips, a food intake log allowing employees to check their calorie counts and an activity log to record their exercise schedule.

"Too many wellness programs fail because they are complicated and difficult to implement," said Aaron Day, CEO and Chairman of Tangerine Wellness. "Tangerine is easy. Lose weight. Get paid. Our participation levels are over 60 percent, even for firms using the Tangerine program for multiple years. Our long-term program is proven to lower healthcare costs for employers while keeping employees happy and healthy."
