PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - October 12, 2010) - Tango, a free mobile video calling service for iPhone and Android, today announced that one million people have downloaded Tango from the App Store and Android Marketplace in the first 10 days of its release on September 30. Tango debuted as the number one Social Networking application in the App Store in the first week of its release in nine countries including the U.S., France, Hong Kong, South Korea, Spain, and Taiwan. In the Android Marketplace, Tango has ranked in the top 10 Communications apps since launch.
"The interest level in Tango has exceeded our highest expectations," said Uri Raz, cofounder and CEO of Tango. "The App Store and Android Marketplace will continue to allow millions of people to easily discover and enjoy Tango. It's been incredible to see how Tango has already affected so many lives around the world from grandparents watching their grandchildren's soccer games, to friends video calling each other from the Great Wall of China, to the Deaf community embracing Tango. We have an opportunity to impact how the world communicates and we are taking every step possible to bring Tango to every screen around you."
Currently, 40 percent of downloads are U.S.-based with tremendous interest and growth internationally. People are Tangoing in 125 countries to connect with their family and friends from wherever they are. In the past week, Tango ranks in the top five in the Social Networking category in 26 countries including the U.S., Chile, Egypt, France, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Luxembourg, South Korea, Spain, and Taiwan.
"People expect more from their phones than hearing someone's voice," said Eric Setton, cofounder and CTO of Tango. "As phones and networks can now support video calling, there will be a transformation in the way people make calls with video and we are excited to be a catalyst for this. We are working around the clock to make sure that our free video calling service is working great for everyone and will continue to listen to our community and innovate quickly to provide the best experience possible."
With more than 270,000 apps available in the App Store, Tango's meteoric rise to the top of the Social Networking category is indicative of the consumer demand for mobile video calling. There are more than 325 million smartphones (http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1421013) already in use and more than 1 billion people worldwide (http://www.research2guidance.com/smartphone-application-market-to-reach-us15-65-billion-in-2013/) are expected to be using smartphones by 2013. Considering the wireless voice market is expected to reach $1 trillion in (http://www.mobilemarketer.com/cms/news/research/5125.html) the next two years, video calling will become a natural extension of the regular calling experience.
Tango supports the iPhone 3GS and 4G, and Android phones including Motorola Droid and Droid X; HTC EVO, Desire, and Incredible; Samsung GalaxyS; and Google Nexus One. Tango works with carrier phone and data plans, and on Wi-Fi networks.
