BURLINGTON, MA--(Marketwire - Dec 11, 2012) - Arbor Networks, Inc., a leading provider of security and network management solutions for enterprise and service provider networks, announced today that Tata Communications (NYSE: TCL), a leading provider of a new world of communications, has joined Arbor's Cloud Signaling(SM) Coalition (CSC). The CSC is an innovative partnership between service providers, data center operators and enterprises with the mission to ensure the availability of their network infrastructure and speed time-to-mitigation for distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
"Tata Communications has a globally distributed, cloud-based DDoS detection and mitigation infrastructure that protects our customers' IT infrastructures from being blocked from the web. That infrastructure is working for our customers 24x7," said Eric Hemmendinger, head of product management for managed security services, Tata Communications. "Many of our customers are experiencing application-layer DDoS attacks that are just as dangerous as traditional network-layer volumetric attacks, and these are often most effectively mitigated at the edge of the customer's network with the Pravail device, which is seamlessly integrated with our network-based infrastructure through Arbor's Cloud Signaling Coalition. With Pravail and the Cloud Signaling Coalition, we are expanding our capabilities to protect our customers and extending Tata Communications' leadership position in managed security services."
Cloud Signaling(SM) Functionality: A faster, automated way to provide comprehensive DDoS Mitigation
At the heart of Cloud Signaling functionality are the Arbor Peakflow® SP and Pravail® Availability Protection System (APS) solutions. Peakflow SP powers many of the world's leading cloud-based DDoS managed security services, while Arbor's Pravail Availability Protection System (APS) is an on-premise device that protects the data center edge against threats to availability -- specifically, protection against application-layer distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. Cloud Signaling is an efficient and integrated way of bridging the enterprise data center to the service provider cloud. Cloud Signaling connects the on-premise Pravail APS device with the cloud-based Peakflow SP solution, helping to ensure the availability of data center infrastructures and speed time-to-mitigation for DDoS attacks. Arbor believes that the best way for enterprises, data centers and cloud operators to have optimal protection against DDoS attacks is through this combination of on-premise and in-cloud protection.
Cloud Signaling Coalition: How does it work?
When an enterprise or data center operator discovers that they are under a service-disrupting DDoS attack, they can choose to mitigate the attack in the cloud by triggering an alert to upstream infrastructure of their service provider's network. A volumetric DDoS attack congesting the upstream links would immediately diminish or disappear altogether from the data center's access links, and service availability would be protected. Participation in the Cloud Signaling Coalition allows the service provider to provide differentiated managed security services, reduces the time to mitigation and increases the effectiveness of the response against DDoS threats, thus saving the customer from major operational expenses and helping to preserve its reputation. Enterprise and data center customers also benefit from real time monitoring of the attack mitigation, as well as granular post mortem reports with details of the attack and the steps taken by the service provider to mitigate the attack, keeping them in control and in command of the event.
"Arbor has worked with Tata Communications for many years, helping to secure its network and enabling it to deliver profitable in-cloud managed security services. With the Cloud Signaling capability, we are bringing together all stakeholders to address the DDoS threat to availability in a comprehensive, automated manner. Having a global telecommunications leader such as Tata Communications join the CSC is a great validation of Arbor's position as a solution supplier and trusted partner," says Arbor Networks president Colin Doherty.
