Tax Tip: Teaching Taxes to Students Is as Easy As 1, 2, 3

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 6, 2014) -

Did you know?

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has free tax and financial literacy learning resources to help educators teach their students about taxes. Teaching Taxes and Responsible Citizenship and Canada's Tax System are two educator-led learning units that introduce students to Canada's tax system, teach them how to prepare a simple income tax and benefit return and explore the relationship between Canada's tax system and the quality of life in Canada.

Teaching Taxes

This free learning product provides students with the tools and skills they need to increase their knowledge of the Canadian tax system, and help them meet their tax obligations. Targeted at high school and post-secondary students, the program is made up of 180 minutes of in-class instruction and student exercises available in electronic or printed workbooks. The topics covered include:

  • the history of taxes in the world;
  • Canada's tax system and the Taxpayer Bill of Rights;
  • types of taxes and deductions and what they mean;
  • tax obligations for new employees;
  • tax benefits students may be entitled to; and
  • how to prepare a simple income tax and benefit return.

Responsible Citizenship and Canada's Tax System

In 180 minutes of interactive in-class instruction and student exercises, this online product helps high school and post-secondary students develop an appreciation and sense of responsibility toward Canadian citizenship. Designed to meet a wide range of teaching and learning preferences, it examines:

  • where tax dollars go;
  • rights and responsibilities of taxpayers;
  • issues related to the underground economy and its effect on Canadian society; and
  • how this knowledge can be applied to practical, real-life situations and experiences.

These easy-to-teach and flexible learning products promote financial literacy and offer practical life skills that can be incorporated into most academic curriculums. The CRA distributes Teaching Taxes and Responsible Citizenship and Canada's Tax System learning materials to thousands of teachers and their students nationally each year. Will you be one of them?
