T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc. Announces Completion of New Multi-Story Concrete Humanities Building at El Camino College

On-Schedule, On-Budget Completion Accomplished With Aid of Green Hat Program

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - December 11, 2007) - Today T.B. Penick & Sons, one of the largest and most trusted contractors in the west for more than a century, announced the completion of the new three-story, architectural concrete humanities building at El Camino College located in Torrance in Los Angeles County. The $29 million hard-bid project has a 30,000 square-foot footprint with a total of 83,000 square feet of enclosed space. Project preparation and execution emphasized planning and monitoring along with exceptional standards of quality and safety. Successful completion was aided in part by T.B. Penick's Green Hat program, a unique training and probationary program that trains, tests and evaluates each worker's knowledge, skill, productivity and safety.

"Our Green Hat Program essentially teaches our team members to complete projects the 'Penick way' in terms of safety and quality," said Tim Penick, president of T.B. Penick. "Workers get straight feedback on their strengths and weaknesses, our superintendents and management track their capabilities and safety and our clients benefit from a well-trained, top-quality workforce."

At all stages of construction, productivity levels, costs and esthetics were monitored and reviewed to meet schedule, budget and design requirements. For example, T.B. Penick made the suggestion to the project architect that finished concrete would provide a better look and feel than paint. After the architect reviewed the quality and finish of the cast concrete, it was decided to forgo painting the walls and leave almost all concrete walls exposed. Most of the structural concrete work is exposed, both interior and exterior. The contract included all steel reinforcing. The T.B. Penick team coordinated closely with the construction manager and subcontractors during the project.

"In addition to thoroughly planning the work, the Superintendent excelled at training and leading his workforce," said Penick. "Productivity was very high, and the jobsite kept neat and orderly. The finished work is of high quality, the entire workforce was motivated and the team successfully met uniformly high safety standards, which in turn made for another satisfied client."
