TCS Issued Wireless Data Patents in Four European Countries

Invention Enables Compression of Data Sent to Wireless Devices

ANNAPOLIS, MD--(Marketwire - December 11, 2007) - TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a leading provider of mission-critical wireless communications, today announced that it has been issued patents in the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Denmark for an invention titled "A Method of Transmitting Data From a Transmitter to One or More Receivers."

The patent describes a method that enables data to be transmitted to a wireless device such that only new information from previous similar messages is sent to the device. The invention would apply to updated repeat messages such as weather, sports, and stock information. Unnecessary data are not sent to the device, saving bandwidth for the operator, and data usage fees for the user.

The newest patents are related to existing patents issued to TCS in the same four countries and also are related to US patent 6,011,954 titled "Transmitting Updated Data" that TCS owns.

The TCS patent portfolio contains 55 patents and over 170 patent applications in the US and abroad.

About The Invention

The "A Method of Transmitting Data From a Transmitter to One or More Receivers" patent describes a method for transmitting data to one or more receivers in the form of a row of characters whereby one set of characters is unchanged from a succeeding or preceding message and another set of characters is new. When the message is refreshed in such a way that some characters are changed while others remain unchanged, then some of the unchanged characters are not transmitted to the receiver in the refreshing process.
