TCS Receives Cornerstone Location and Presence Patent -- Enables Delivery of Wireless Device Information to Authorized Sources

Mobile Activity Status Tracker Patent Supports Next-Generation Location-Based Services, Including Messaging, Geo-Fencing and Advertising

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 19, 2006 -- TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a leading provider of mission-critical wireless communications, today announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,110,773 titled, "Mobile Activity Status Tracker (MAST)."

The MAST invention allows presence information and location information regarding a particular wireless device, which is contained in the Home Location Register (HLR) of a wireless carrier, to be made available to any authorized outside entity or application. This invention enables authorized sources to use location and presence information for specialized services such as location-based advertising and couponing, mapping, mobile instant messaging, traffic alerts and geo-fencing.

"Providing information from the mobile carrier's HLR serves as a basic element for providing location and presence services," stated Tim Lorello, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for TCS. "TCS' Mobile Activity Status Tracker patent therefore provides an excellent addition to our growing portfolio of location-based intellectual property. Other TCS location and presence building block technologies have similarly been patented or are currently in the patent process."

ABOUT THE INVENTION

A MAST comprises a database relating to an individual wireless device subscriber that contains the subscriber's presence and location information. The MAST system duplicates the same or similar information of a HLR and is available to external entities that are not restricted to SS7 standards. The MAST application has the ability to pull presence and location information or to push presence and location information to a requesting entity via the Internet and Intranet.

Mobile presence and location are key concepts for location-based services and applications that require knowledge of a mobile subscriber's availability. Such services include marketing and information applications, as well as public safety and law enforcement applications that make use of a subscriber's last known whereabouts and availability.

TCS now holds 46 patents and has more than 120 additional patent applications pending in the United States and jurisdictions throughout the world.
