TCS' Text Messaging Web Portal Marks Milestone of 25 Million Registered Subscribers

Rapid Adoption of Text Messaging Is Fueled by Increased Consumer Demand for Personalized Messaging Services

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 17, 2007 -- TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a global leader in mission-critical wireless data communications, today announced it recently exceeded 25 million subscriber registrations for personalized text messaging through the Company's best-in-class wireless messaging portal. This milestone comes as Short Messaging Service (SMS) volume is continuing its strong growth and reached new heights during the recent holiday season.

"This subscriber growth milestone is a testament to the importance and adoption of text messaging as a truly personalized communication service," stated Drew Morin, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for TeleCommunication Systems. "Mobile consumers have cast their votes for a personalized text messaging experience over 25 million times."

With the increasing SMS traffic volume, carriers need to differentiate the consumer experience to increase wireless data Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and reduce churn. A personalized consumer text messaging experience can be created easily with a few mouse clicks, using the TCS Web portal applications suite. The applications provide the ultimate mobile text messaging user experience and can be invoked to set up calendar reminders for birthdays, anniversaries, meetings and other appointments. Carriers must also protect their mobile users from unwanted SMS messages and spammers. Messaging privacy features allow subscribers to create user nicknames to maintain anonymity of their phones, which is extremely useful for mobile mail. Subscribers also can control messages sent from Internet Websites and e-mail addresses to prevent unwanted SMS messages from being delivered to their mobile devices.

TCS launched its Web portal service in 2004 and celebrated its ten-millionth registered subscriber one year ago. TCS provides the portal application suite as part of its Wireless Messaging Gateway (WMG) product line, which is currently deployed with three of the top five U.S. carriers. The WMG resides on the edge of the carrier network; intelligently routes SMS, Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages; uses geographically distributed load balancing; drives messaging traffic with Web-based applications; insulates carrier network elements from the Internet; and offers both subscriber and carrier anti-spam controls.
