Teachers learn to promote math talk

ETFO offers professional upgrading courses Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 26, 2005) - Communication skills are an important part of learning math. Promoting math talk is one of the unique concepts teachers will hear about at a summer course offered by the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Peel Teacher Local.

The course is one of a wide range of professional development opportunities offered this summer by ETFO in partnership with its locals across the province. Courses are taught by ETFO members and designed to provide teachers with practical skills and resources to use in their classrooms. Hundreds of elementary teachers are expected to take part.

Available courses include a women's leadership institute, principals' qualifications program, and credit courses.

ETFO and the Peel Teacher Local are offering:

What: Making Math Happen in the Junior Grades!

When: July 26, 27 and 28

Where: Peel Teacher Local Educator's Centre, 6435 Edwards Blvd., Mississauga, Ontario

This course is based on one of ETFO's newest resources for teachers, Making Math Happen in the Junior Years. Teachers of math in Grades 4 - 6 will look at the various components that contribute to an effective mathematics program-from physical set-up, use of manipulatives, assessment strategies, problem solving, math literature, 'math talk' ideas, and useful resources.
