SAN JOSE, CA --(Marketwired - July 19, 2013) - As Team San Jose (TSJ) and the San Jose hotel community draws closer to unveiling the anticipated convention center expansion, newly appointed board members add depth to an already strong, committed list of local leaders.
TSJ's Board ratified four (4) new members and reinstated ten (10) members for another term in an effort to continue the strong economic momentum of the last two years. While preparing for a continued rise in business activity, the 15-member Board will keep TSJ on task in developing the right convention, event and theater business mix while streamlining operations.
"Team San Jose has had its best year ever, delivering strong economic results for the City of San Jose," said Michael Mulcahy, Team San Jose board chairman, who works closely with two City board liaisons to streamline communications, including Councilmember Pete Constant and Lee Wilcox, Assistant to the City Manager and Downtown Manager. "Our Board of Directors is made up of seasoned community, tourism, arts and industry leaders focused on business development and promoting San Jose as a destination. Our new board additions will continue to drive our mission to put heads in beds, butts in seats and feet on the street, while providing a fresh perspective."
The Board changes included adding new members while saying goodbye and thank you to retiring, and in some cases founding, members of Team San Jose. New Board members include Bonnie Best, general manager of the Hotel Valencia at Santana Row; Larry Hancock, general director of Opera San Jose; Michael Miller, managing director of Children's Musical Theater San Jose; and James MacGregor, publisher of the Silicon Valley Business Journal. Retiring board members include Gary Hageman, general manager of the Holiday Inn San Jose; Dennis Nahat, artistic director of Theater Ventures International; Marc Casto, chief operating officer of Casto Travel and prior CVB Board Chairman; and Bill Pope, business agent for AFSCME Local 101.
The Board also reconfirmed the following board members: John Southwell, managing partner of the Hilton San Jose and Hyatt Place; Kelley Cosgrove, general manager of the Fairmont San Jose; Rob Balmer, general manager of the DoubleTree by Hilton; Robert Thomas, general manager of the Marriott San Jose and Vice Chair of the Board; Michael Mulcahy, managing partner of SDS NexGgen Partners and Board Chairman; Mike Fox, Jr., president and CEO of Goodwill Industries Silicon Valley and Board Treasurer; Andrew Bales, president of Symphony Silicon Valley and Board Secretary; Bill Fairweather, business agent of IATSE Union Local 134; Enrique Fernandez, business agent for HERE Local 19; and Josh Ende, business agent Sign Display & Allied Crafts Local Union 510.
The City of San Jose and Team San Jose are in the final stages of a $130 million convention center expansion and renovation project -- which has remained open and operational throughout the project -- and is on schedule for completion in September 2013. The expansion will add an additional 125,000 square feet of flexible ballroom and meeting room space, increasing San Jose's convention center space to 550,000 square feet of usable space. Board priorities, in addition to preparing for the Grand Opening of the new Convention Center, include: generating fiscal results; supporting San Jose as a destination by securing conventions and executing marketing and public relations initiatives; generating hotel room nights; capital improvements and maintenance; and securing new arts and entertainment events at the various theaters managed by Team San Jose including the San Jose Civic, Montgomery Theater, California Theatre, and Center for the Performing Arts.
