HIPAA Mandates Industry-Wide Standards for Healthcare Information; HITECH Supplements HIPAA; SOC2 Framework Helps Service Organizations Provide Visibility On Trusted Service Principles

Among other things, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was designed to fight fraud and abuse of healthcare benefits. Therefore, one of its key objectives is to ensure confidentiality and security of protected health information (PHI). HIPAA compliance verifies that physical, network, and process security measures are in in place to protect PHI.

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) supplements HIPAA. Its primary concern is to stipulate the penalties for those organizations violating HIPAA rules.

HIPAA and HITECH certification require three steps: Applicant organizations need to choose a training company, attend the training, and finally pass the certification test.

Service Organization Controls 2 (SOC2) is a reporting framework for service organizations. Its key objective is to set forth a means for service providers to report on non-financial internal controls so that their clients get a better understanding for the enforcement of the five Trusted Service Principles (TSP). These five TSPs include system security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy. SOC2 goes beyond SOC1 as it allows for a more extensive system definition and operations. SOC2 has been demanded by a great variety of user organizations. SOC2 compliance is demonstrated by an audit.
