Tech Lighting/LBL Lighting's Light-and-Sound railtones™ Speakers Honored With 2011 International red dot Design

railtones to Be Displayed in red dot design museum

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - March 28, 2011) - Tech Lighting, a leading manufacturer of sophisticated lighting products for a broad range of aesthetic styles, today announced its railtones™  wireless speaker system for track lighting -- created in partnership with its sister brand LBL Lighting and with support from Beyond Design of Chicago -- was selected as a prestigious red dot design award winner. As one of only 18 category winners in the international design competition, winning for Entertainment Technology and Cameras, railtones will be featured in the red dot design museum in Essen, Germany this July. This year more than 4,433 products were reviewed by the 36 judges before winners were determined.

"We're truly honored to receive such a high-profile award and the recognition by these renowned judges," said Sean Lavin, the Vice President of Design at Tech Lighting who also served in that role for LBL Lighting when railtones was developed. "Consumer products that create a seamless blend between intuitive design and practical performance were a major theme this year, and railtones exemplifies that trend."

railtones' wireless speakers mount to and are powered by the companies' popular low-voltage track lighting systems, or can be mounted to many of the most popular track lighting systems in homes and commercial spaces today. They can also be adapted to most six-inch recessed downlights. As such, if track lighting is installed initially, the speakers can be added without drilling holes, stringing wires or hiring an electrician, with users connecting the speakers directly and then plugging a wireless transmitter into almost any audio device, including a computer's USB port, an iPod/iPhone™ or MP3 player, receiver, stereo or television. An infrared remote control adjusts the power and volume of each speaker, and the system features uncompressed HD-quality audio for superb sound (1.6MBs per channel).

"Our concept and design of railtones marries light and sound to enhance any environment and bring a truly holistic approach to a room's design. Not only did we create the speakers to ensure they blend with our lighting designs, but we also wanted to offer a surround sound solution that fits with people's busy lifestyles and budgets," notes Lavin. The railtones kit includes two wireless speakers, one wireless transmitter (plus power adaptor/cords) and one remote control with volume control and four pre-set equalizer options for $599 list price. Additional speakers, adaptors and a sub-woofer can be purchased separately.

The red dot design award dates back to 1955 and is the world's largest and most distinguished design competition. The judging addresses three disciplines: product design, communication design and design concept. This year, the thousands of high-tech and imaginative everyday objects submitted came from more than 60 nations, from Algeria to the United States, and included newcomers Nepal and Belarus.

"There are four qualities a product has to possess in order to meet the requirements for good design: the quality of function, seduction, use, and responsibility. If all four qualities arrive at a balanced synthesis, it will be good design," said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, the founder and president of the red dot design award competition. "Only those who design products in an exemplary way are awarded the red dot design award and can refer to this outstanding distinction with justified pride."

Winners will participate in an awards ceremony in the Aalto-Theater in Essen, Germany on July 4, 2011. Every winning product will be displayed in the museum from July 5 through August 1, among more than 1,500 other products that comprise the largest permanent exhibition of comtemporary design worldwide. More information on the red dot award and museum is at www.red-dot.de/presse.
