Technologies and Solutions to Advance Local Government Action

Local Governments Launch Organization Focused on Energy, Economic Security and Prosperity

BOULDER, CO--(Marketwire - October 19, 2010) -  Applied Solutions, established in 2008, is focused on bringing together the needs, resources and collective voice of counties and cities to further development of low energy, water and transport public infrastructure. This new organization of local governments, formed by elected county and city officials, is being launched nationally in Boulder, Colorado on November 10.

As local governments, Applied Solutions members directly control how public infrastructure is developed and how water and energy demands are managed. Applied Solutions was derived from a specific, rigorous methodology that guides local governments in the design and execution of infrastructure projects and systems aiming for the lowest energy use and optimal efficiency to advance strong economic and environmental gains.

"Applied Solutions will be hosting a nationwide conference with local elected officials, key staff from federal agencies, representatives from national scientific laboratories, select academic institutions and industry partners with the focus on solutions achievable today that can help our nation's local governments," Applied Solutions Chair person Valerie Brown said.

This conference will feature an intense, daylong workshop conducted to address the financial constraints inhibiting local governments' ability to rebuild their infrastructure systems. A broad array of financial interests including bond markets, assessment districts, PACE (property assessed clean energy), feed-in-tariffs, green banks, insurance and many other groups will be discussing ways to adapt existing financial mechanisms and create new tools to kick-start large scale redevelopment at the local level. A policy paper will be developed based upon the outcome of the financial tools workshop.

Applied Solutions Executive Director Michelle Wyman said, "Applied Solutions directly responds to the challenges local governments face to maintain services, infrastructure and livability with fewer resources by providing concrete tools and supporting the collective voice of local government leadership to ensure their priorities are heard by national leadership."

Applied Solutions will focus on:

  • Technical partnerships with national laboratories to bring solutions to market that are directly responsive to local governments needs.
  • Financial tools and mechanisms that leverage strained local government resources and build investment opportunities to advance Applied Solutions projects at the local level.
  • A simple and solid methodology to guide counties and cities in modifying standard public infrastructure projects to achieve low energy and water use with efficient use of land.
  • A local government resource for Applied Solutions tools, process and technical support.
