TED Selects Apigee to Enable API Management and Accelerate Developer Adoption

TED API to Foster Development of New Apps for Viewing and Sharing Popular TED Content

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 3, 2011) - Apigee, the leading provider of API management products and services, today announced that TED, the non-profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, has selected the Apigee Enterprise API management platform as the foundation for its upcoming TEDTalk Web API (application programming interface).

TED's API, which was announced earlier this year, is designed to provide software developers with an easy way to create new innovative apps using TedTalk content. TED will use Apigee's API platform to manage scale and growth, understand API usage, and drive adoption.

June Cohen, TED's executive producer of Media, said, "Our goal in opening up TED's API is to invite the developer community to support our mission to spread ideas. We're thrilled to be working with Apigee and hope to see a diverse ecosystem of apps emerge that allow TED content to be shared and viewed worldwide."

TED started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Now, along with its two annual conferences and many other projects, TED offers the award-winning TEDTalks video site, where the best talks and performances from TED and partners are available to the world, for free. More than 900 TEDTalks are now available, with more added each week.

Initially, the TED API will focus on TED's content library, giving developers access to TED's almost 900 posted TEDTalks, as well as their rich metadata, including topic/tag, date, event, length, ratings, translations and transcripts. Access to the API will be granted to individual developers or organizations, based on an application detailing the proposed non-commercial use.

Apigee Enterprise is a robust management platform for the most demanding APIs. It reduces the complexity of delivering APIs, drives developer adoption, provides comprehensive analysis and control of API usage, and helps businesses scale as API channels grow. Over 250 enterprises now use Apigee Enterprise, and the market is accelerating as businesses increasingly adopt an API strategy to foster an 'app ecosystem' across millions of mobile, tablet and set-top platforms and devices. Industry analysts at Gartner predict that by 2014, 75 percent of the Fortune 1000 will offer public Web APIs.*

"TED is known for its innovative approach to sharing ideas, and through their API, they are now actively engaging the broader community in this effort," said Chet Kapoor, Apigee CEO. "We are pleased to include TED in our growing list industry leaders and innovators that are relying on Apigee's platform to drive and manage their API ecosystem."
