Ted Turner Wins Pine Brothers Trophy at International 12-Metre North American Championship

NEWPORT, RI--(Marketwire - Sep 28, 2011) - Second time was the charm for Media Mogul/yachtsman TED TURNER, as he piloted his former yacht American Eagle to 4 first place finishes to win the Pine Brothers Trophy at last weekend's International 12-Metre North American sailing Championships in Newport, Rhode Island. Over the two day event held on Narragansett Bay, which features the most skilled 12-Metre sailors in the world, Turner captured 4 first place and 1 second place finish to claim the Pine Brothers Trophy. The trophy is given to the yacht with the best overall performance. Turner is the former owner of American Eagle, which he used to win most of the world's great ocean races. In 1977 skippering another boat, Turner won the coveted America's Cup. Pine Brothers is the sponsor of the International 12-Metre North American Championship and makers of the Pine Brothers softish throat drops. The company was founded in 1870 and is based in Pebble Beach, California. Pine Brothers Chairman Rider McDowell, a former 12-Metre competitor, was on hand to present the trophy to Mr. Turner. "It's fitting that Ted won the trophy this year. He's a fierce competitor and an extremely well liked figure in world sailing circles." Turner was formerly married to actress Jane Fonda, and is the founder of TBS and CNN and active in many philanthropic endeavors around the world. He returned to competitive sailing last year after a long hiatus.
