Tego Introduces Radion™ Tag for Gamma and Radiation RFID

Tego's Radion Is the First Multi-Use Gamma-Sterilizable Gen 2 UHF Tag for Medical, Nuclear and Life-Science RFID Applications

WALTHAM, MA--(Marketwire - April 6, 2011) -   Tego, the leading provider of high memory RFID tagging solutions, today announced the Tego Radion™ tag, the first Gen 2 UHF tag capable of surviving repeated gamma-sterilization and other intense radiation exposure. The Radion tag enables RFID applications in medical, life-science and food industries where gamma sterilization is common, and it is also applicable in the nuclear energy industry for tracking radioactive materials or assets exposed to radiation.

Tego's Radion tag is the first truly radiation-proof, multi-use tag that is compatible with standard Gen 2 UHF RFID infrastructure (EPCglobal / ISO 18000-6C). Its survivability is based on the same underlying technology as Tego's flagship 32 Kbyte chip design for aerospace. Tego's Radion offers 1.5 kilobits of EPC and user memory for extended functionality in supply chain, asset management and logistics applications as well as maintenance tracking. With the Radion tag, users can now make decisions at the point of read even when the tag has been exposed to radiation. They can read and write tag data on the spot, without relying on back-end data systems significantly reducing the time and cost for decision-making with assets and applications. For example, the ability to view maintenance logs, configurations or other historical data at the point of read is a key benefit of Tego's extended memory products.

Conventional RFID tags do not survive radiation as data is corrupted or destroyed. Up to now, the radiation susceptibility of RFID tags has impeded many applications for tracking critical items such as pharmaceutical and life science consumables and process instrumentation; medical implants and surgical kits; sterilized foods; radio-isotopes for nuclear medicine or fuels; and components, tools and plant equipment for nuclear power and defense industry applications. In addition, other tags claim radiation resistance, but they are not standards compliant (EPCglobal Gen 2 UHF or ISO 18000-6C) or they failed in real-world tests requiring gamma-sterilization or radiation.

"We put Radion through multiple sterilization cycles with exposure to 100kGy of gamma radiation -- roughly 25,000 times the human lethal dose," said Bob Hamlin, CTO at Tego.
