Tekelec Releases Heavy Reading Policy Server Recommendations for the Mobile Broadband Era

White Paper and Webinar Explore How PCRF Can Create New Service Models for Operators; Recommends Synergies With Subscriber Data Management and Performance Management

MORRISVILLE, NC--(Marketwire - October 6, 2010) - Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), the broadband data management company, will participate in a webinar that discusses the findings of a new whitepaper authored by Heavy Reading on the role of policy control in managing network resources. Heavy Reading Chief Analyst Graham Finnie and Randy Fuller, director of business planning at Tekelec, will present "Policy Control: Adapting for What's Next" on October 7 at 10 a.m. EDT. Registration information can be found here.

The whitepaper, authored by Finnie, details how the growth in apps, smartphones and traffic guarantees that current service models must be adapted or replaced. The whitepaper and webinar consist of original research by Heavy Reading and Pyramid Research, including an extensive 2010 survey on network provider attitudes related to the use of policy management tools. Key findings include the recommended minimum core abilities for the Policy Charging and Rules Function (PCRF) network element:

  • Change policy conditions without requiring software code changes from the vendor
  • Integrate with many new and different types of network elements
  • Connect to higher layer application functions
  • Integrate with a wide range of existing billing and customer care systems
  • Provide or work with supplementary subscriber data management (SDM) systems
  • Provide or interface with performance management systems to measure network status and inform the policy server so services can be adapted

"Policy platforms must be adaptable and dynamic if they are to cope with the much more fluid service models that are coming as we move into the Broadband 2.0 era," Finnie said. "By ensuring that chosen platforms can handle the widening range of tasks, from subscriber management to performance management, network operators can ensure that they are in the best possible position to make that transition."

The whitepaper is available for free download here.
