Telcordia Scientist Named Vice Chair of IEEE 802.21 Working Group

Industry Group Developing Standards for Seamless, Reliable Handoffs Between 3G, Wi-Fi and WiMAX Networks

PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwire - July 16, 2008) - Telcordia today announced that the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.21: Media Independent Handover Services working group has named Dr. Subir Das, Senior Scientist, Advanced Technology Solutions, Telcordia, as its vice chair. The appointment is the industry's latest recognition of Telcordia's leadership in developing the next-generation technologies and standards that provide communications service providers (CSPs) with new revenue and market-differentiation opportunities.

802.21 is an emerging IEEE standard that enables seamless voice, data and multimedia handoffs between heterogeneous networks, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, WiMAX and 3G networks. The 802.21 working group's progress will help enable the telecom industry's migration toward convergence, where users can continue to access services without interruption, even as their devices seamlessly and automatically switch from one network to another.

"IEEE 802.21 is enabling true convergence, where seamless handoffs occur quickly and gracefully without interrupting user sessions," said Das. "Advancements being made by the 802.21 working group are key in enabling CSPs to offer premium experiences to subscribers based on leveraging the benefits associated with being able to seamlessly and effortlessly move across various access network types."

Founded in March 2004, the IEEE 802.21 working group has more than 30 company members. Telcordia has taken a leading role in defining the 802.21 Information Service, which creates a framework that enables handsets and other mobile devices to discover available networks, analyze those choices and then select the best one. Telcordia has also developed carrier-grade technology that works with the standard to reduce handover delay time to about 40 milliseconds, which is key to ensuring optimum performance of real-time, delay-sensitive applications such as voice and streaming multimedia.

Das joined Telcordia in 1999 after serving on the faculty of the Electrical and Electronics Communication Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, where he received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering. At Telcordia, Dr. Das currently leads several research programs in next-generation wireless IP networking and ad hoc networking. He has published more than 50 papers on wireless IP networking and holds four U.S. patents, with more than a dozen pending. Dr. Das also is a lead contributor to a variety of IEEE and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards and has served as the co-chair of the IETF PANA working group.
