TeleCommunication Systems Receives Three U.S. Patents for Wireless Location-Based Services

ANNAPOLIS, MD--(Marketwire - February 11, 2011) - TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a world leader in highly reliable and secure mobile communication technology, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued TCS three patents related to providing location-based services (LBS) to wireless devices. The three U.S. patents are "Wireless Network Tour Guide" (number 7,853,272), "Area Watcher for Wireless Network" (number 7,856,236), and "Method and System for Enabling an Off Board Navigation Solution" (number 7,856,315).

"Wireless Network Tour Guide" describes a method for providing tour-guide information to wireless devices, such as smart phones, for use in self-guided tour scenarios. The TCS tour guide creates a system in which location-based wireless services in a service provider's network are intertwined with a message database of text or audio messages. The system provides location information about the subscriber to the message database without requiring the wireless device itself to provide the location information. A location-management system can then determine where the subscriber is and map his or her location to the desired text or audio format. Inherent in the invention is its ability to manage location updates based upon how quickly or slowly the user progresses along the tour route by the location-management system or user prompts.

"Area Watcher for Wireless Network" describes a system in which dynamic and current information is provided to authorized third parties about a wireless device's entry into or exit from custom-defined geographical areas. An area-watcher application monitors preconfigured wireless devices' entry or exit into preconfigured watched areas. The invention lends itself to a variety of applications. For instance, the system can notify a third-party retailer when a wireless user enters the retailer's store location and then send the potential customer a promotional offer on their wireless device. The invention is also desirable in social networking in which members of a social network are informed when other members are in a specified area, such as an entertainment or dining venue.

"Method and System for Enabling an Off Board Navigation Solution" describes a method for providing real-time, off-board, voice-enabled routing directions using a mobile communication device. Most in-vehicle automotive navigation devices contain map database information within the device itself. Off-board navigation, by comparison, provides real-time location and mapping information to the device from a remote server. The newly patented TCS system enables mobile devices to outperform navigational systems that incorporate real-time voice prompted turn-by-turn directions without the need of dead-reckoning and multiple sensors.

"We're living in a highly mobile, highly informed society in which we expect real-time information relevant to our location delivered directly to our wireless device," said Drew Morin, senior vice president and CTO for TCS. "These three location-based services patents affirm TCS' commitment to leading the wireless industry with vision and innovation to develop the technologies that enhance the daily lives of people on the move."

As of December 31, 2010, TCS holds 136 patents worldwide with more than 300 applications pending. To learn more about TCS patents, please visit: http://www.telecomsys.com/about/ip-licensing/patents.aspx
