Teletouch - Hawk Electronics Div. Survey Reveals Cell Phone Etiquette Issues

New Poll Gives New Insights to Text Messaging and Talking on Cell Phones in Public

FORT WORTH, TX--(Marketwire - September 26, 2007) - When it comes to using cell phones and other mobile electronics devices, everyone has their "pet peeves." To help cell phone users mind their manners, Teletouch Communications, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: TLLE), a leading U.S. cellular, mobile electronics and related products and services provider, and its Hawk Electronics division recently surveyed more than 450 of its cellular customers to better understand users' perceptions about proper cell phone etiquette in a variety of situations. What Hawk found about the rules for using cell phones in public places was fascinating and insightful:

--  58% said that cell phone users should never send text messages while
    in a movie theater
--  Only 6% believed having a downloaded musical ring tone was appropriate
    in a work setting
--  Respondents were almost evenly split on the possibility of being able
    to use cell phones on airplanes during flights
--  90% of respondents said that phones should either be turned off
    completely, not answered and / or checked only during a free moment at a
    restaurant
    

The behaviors that seemed to annoy respondents the most (34%) were talking too loudly on cell phones in public, closely followed by forgetting to silence cell phones in quiet settings.

"New technologies such as cell phones make our lives easier, but they come with a new set of cultural rules and social graces," said Bradi Van Noy-Hays, also know as Hawk Electronics' Gadget Girl (http://hawksgadgetgirl.wordpress.com). "Cell phones are such an integral part of our daily routine that people forget why it's so important to be considerate. By better understanding how 'other' people feel about using these tools in public, users will be more alert to those situations where their cell etiquette is less than ideal."

The issue of driving while using a cell phone has become an important topic across the U.S., and some state governments such as Minnesota have recently passed laws making it illegal for drivers to talk on cell phones while driving. As more and more states and insurance companies are looking into the relationship of accidents while using a cell phone, Hawk's survey found that more than 90% of those surveyed said that they have encountered people driving poorly who were using their cell phone at the time.

"Many of the people we surveyed really seem to be split on their views about using a cell phone while driving," said Ms. Van Noy-Hays. "On one hand, almost everyone has encountered bad driving as a result of someone using their cell phone. Yet, many of these same people still say that it is safe to drive and talk on their cell phone without the use of a hands-free device."

According to the Hawk survey:

--  80% of the respondents admit to talking on their cell phone while
    driving without the use of a hands-free device;
--  Of that same group, 57% believe that it should be against the law to
    drive and talk on a mobile device without the use of a hands-free device;
--  Only 32% admit to having checked e-mail or sending a text message
    while driving.
    

Among younger users, poor driving habits are becoming ingrained at an increasingly earlier age. A recent survey by AAA and Seventeen magazine showed higher results of cell phone usage among teenage drivers. After surveying more than 1,000 16- and 17-year-old-drivers, the study found that 46% say that they text message when driving and 51% talk on cell phones constantly while driving.

"Mobile phones bring a new set of challenges for parents of teenage drivers," said Ms. Van Noy-Hays. "As with any other teenage dangers such as the use of drugs or alcohol, parents should talk with their children about the importance of staying focused while driving. As part of their counseling, parents should consider purchasing tools such as headsets and hands-free devices, which can significantly reduce teenage driving distractions and ultimately, their related accidents and fatalities."

The online survey, conducted by e-Marketing Strategies by e-mail in August 2007, consisted of responses from 458 Hawk customers. Of the participants, 213 were female and 245 were male. Complete survey details are available upon request.
