TELUS Brings the Home of the Future to Calgary

From biometric home security, to an intelligent kitchen, to a 78" 4K Ultra HD entertainment experience, the Future Home offers Calgarians a glimpse into how technology will transform their lives

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Oct. 21, 2015) - TELUS has brought the home of the future to Calgary to demonstrate the potential of its state-of-the-art fibre optic network and offer a preview of what will be possible when homes are connected at the speed of light. The Future Home showcases some of the most cutting-edge technology available today and provides a sneak peek at smart-home innovations on the horizon. TELUS collaborated with technology leaders including Samsung, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent to envision the Future Home and bring the near-term possibilities enabled by dramatically faster Internet speeds to life.

The 560-square-foot Future Home, which is built to simulate a small condo, offers an immersive technology experience that demonstrates how technology will help us to live more efficiently than ever before:

  • Security systems will allow us to secure and unlock our homes using facial recognition; you'll never have to search for keys again
  • Smart cooktops will guide us through a new recipe with a step-by-step demonstration; then calculate the nutritional value of the meal to make sure you stay on track with your wellness plan
  • A connected home office with an interactive touch table could be a lifesaver when you're too sick to go to the doctor's office; instead, have your appointment over high-definition video conference
  • Connected thermostats and lighting will reduce energy costs; enabling you to control you lighting and heating conveniently from your smartphone or tablet
  • Next-generation home entertainment could make heading to the movies a thing of the past when the ultra HD Optik TV experience is brought to life on an awe-inspiring 78" Samsung Curved UHD TV; better yet, while your kids simultaneously stream content on their tablets without interruption

"TELUS Fibre is the most advanced communications infrastructure available in the world today and is laying the groundwork for the smart homes, businesses and cities of tomorrow," said Tony Geheran, EVP & President, Broadband Networks, TELUS. "We're building the network of the future in a number of communities across Alberta and have trialed this capability here in Hillhurst, Crescent Heights, and Capitol Hill. The Future Home offers a compelling glimpse into how a fibre optic network can transform our homes and enhance our lives."

"Samsung products and innovation are at the forefront of the thinking behind the connected home," said Paul Brannen, Senior Vice President, Enterprise and Mobile Solutions, Samsung Electronics Canada. "Our Smart TVs - connected and compatible through the Tizen OS to devices such as mobile phones and tablets - not only help establish a centralized system of control, but redefine the entertainment experience on multiple screens for all of the family to enjoy."

The Future Home is located at TELUS Spark in Calgary from October 21 to 29. Admission to TELUS Spark is not required and tours will be open to the public daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All Future Home visitors will have the opportunity to enter a contest sponsored by TELUS, where they will have a chance to win a prize pack, courtesy of Samsung, which includes a 55" Samsung UHD TV (retail value $2,500), a Samsung Galaxy Tab S LTE 8.4 (retail value $580) and a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge (retail value $850) - no purchase is necessary.
