Tenderloin Health & MOMS Pharmacy Bring Community and Health to Those Most in Need

Respected Nonprofit Expands HIV/AIDS Outreach, Prevention and Education Services Through Unique Collaboration With Pharmacy in the Tenderloin Neighborhood of San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - January 19, 2011) - The acclaimed nonprofit Tenderloin Health (www.tlhealth.org) and MOMS Pharmacy (www.momspharmacy.com) announced today that they will expand upon their already successful partnership to bring additional health and wellbeing services to the underserved in one of San Francisco's neediest neighborhoods. An extensive remodel of MOMS current pharmacy location will include interior and exterior upgrades of both MOMS Pharmacy and Tenderloin Health who share space at 191 Golden Gate Avenue. The new space will include an expanded community learning center, additional community outreach offices, one on one consultation rooms, and comfortable meeting spaces where support groups and prevention and education programs will be offered at no cost to the community.

Said David Fernandez, Executive Director of Tenderloin Health referring to the collaboration with MOMS, "Through MOMS' generosity this newly expanded and remodeled location will provide health access to our most vulnerable and underserved San Francisco residents, the homeless, poor and those living with or at risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS. I know I speak for a lot of our community when I say we can't wait for the remodel to be complete."

MOMS Pharmacy has been serving the San Francisco Bay area since 2005, the same year it opened its first location in cooperation with Tenderloin Health. MOMS operates 2 similar pharmacies in the San Francisco Bay Area, including a much praised center in the Castro which includes the Under One Roof Resource Center for the AIDS/HIV community.

"We are proud of our commitment and long history of supporting the communities most impacted by HIV/AIDS," said Anthony Luna, President of MOMS Pharmacy. "Expanding upon our relationship with Tenderloin Health will ensure that residents will have access to a safe and welcoming space, where they can access the wellness programs and specialized pharmacy services that they need. It's all about building and fostering relationships for the common good."

Tenderloin Health is a San Francisco-based non-profit working to improve the health and overall well-being of the most underserved, vulnerable, poor, and homeless residents of the Tenderloin and surrounding areas of San Francisco. Tenderloin Health serves those living with and at the greatest risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS, who have difficulty obtaining services elsewhere, especially due to substance use, mental illness, sexual orientation, gender identity, race and ethnicity, and/or other social barriers. They work to lessen the incidence of HIV infection, disease progression and homelessness among the residents of the Tenderloin neighborhood using harm reduction philosophy and practice. Tenderloin Health has been in existence since 1990, but configured into its current form in July 2006 through the merger of two long-term Tenderloin-based providers of HIV/AIDS, housing and support services: Continuum HIV Day Services & the Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center (TARC). Initially Continuum and TARC began in 1990. TARC began by offering a health promotion program that trained Tenderloin residents to teach their peers skills on how to reduce their risk of acquiring HIV as well as options to reduce the impact of drug-related harm. Continuum established the first AIDS specific Adult Day health Center in the State of California. Both agencies grew over the years to sponsor a continuum of case management, behavioral health, medical and housing programs to ensure that homeless residents and those living with HIV/AIDS accessed care in the Tenderloin.

Now six days a week, Tenderloin Health has expanded to offer: emergency, transitional, permanent and HIV specialty housing; on-site primary, urgent and HIV specialty medical care; syringe exchange; mental health and substance use assessment and treatment; psychosocial and self-help support; critical life sustaining services, such as nutritional supplementation and peer support; all in partnership with and as a direct result of input from many of the Tenderloin's most vulnerable residents.
