TeraRecon Architects Advanced Visualization for Speed, Scale and High Availability at SIIM 2008

SAN MATEO, CA--(Marketwire - May 15, 2008) - TeraRecon, Inc. (www.terarecon.com), a leader in advanced imaging processing technology and 3D visualization solutions, today announced new innovations for its Aquarius™ suite of advanced visualization offerings, which will be showcased by the company at the 2008 Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) meeting in Seattle, Washington, May 15-18, 2008.

At SIIM 2008, imaging informatics professionals seeking to deploy a high-performance, highly scalable, high-availability solution for enterprise-wide advanced visualization will be introduced to TeraRecon's Aquarius iNtuition™ platform, which features unique innovations and architectural considerations designed with the needs of a range of healthcare enterprises in mind. The system is designed to scale from a single "workstation" configuration, to an isolated radiology department, to a large, multi-site healthcare enterprise, cost-effectively and with ease.

"Advanced visualization is now an established standard of care and mission-critical in many institutions. TeraRecon is increasingly called upon to deploy solutions that address the needs of large, multi-site distributed enterprises that require high performance, high availability, and fault tolerance," said Vikram Simha, chief technology officer and senior vice president of 3D engineering for TeraRecon. "To this end, Aquarius iNtuition has been architected to allow deployment of entry-level configurations as simple as a single workstation, with easy redeployment to larger solutions down the road. Even a 'workstation' is now in fact a client and a server in one computer, and hence a common architecture can persist throughout the life-cycle of a TeraRecon deployment of advanced visualization."

Aquarius iNtuition supports both centralized and distributed configurations equally well. A multi-site enterprise with relatively slow network links between sites can deploy an Aquarius iNtuition solution today with multiple servers that provide local performance, while acting as one large "virtual server" presenting a single database to any user at any site, using TeraRecon's "Mutual Awareness" technology.

Aquarius iNtuition is meanwhile equally well-equipped to operate in a centralized configuration where one central datacenter provides advanced visualization services to a distributed enterprise with faster inter-site links. Aquarius iNtuition supports server redundancy for both data and rendering services, automatic fail-over to a backup system in the event of hardware or software failure, and headless load balancing. Complete failure of a rendering node can be tolerated and the node replaced without compromising operation of the overall enterprise solution. This architecture is designed to allow for virtually infinite scalability with high availability and fault tolerance built-in.

TeraRecon's advanced visualization platform provides a comprehensive suite of advanced visualization applications and decision support tools that can be integrated into the imaging workflow to speed and enrich diagnostic interpretation. The AquariusAPS server hosts multiple optional pre-processing engines to filter for potentially interesting features in volumetric examinations, and to automatically identify, segment and label anatomy. The output of AquariusAPS can drive streamlined and tailored Workflow Templates which know in advance how to swiftly focus on specific areas of interest, speeding the process of navigation through the dataset so that the physician may focus their time and concentration on the interpretation process itself. Results may then be delivered to the enterprise via AquariusWEB, which provides a truly browser-based and enterprise-friendly distribution medium.

"Advanced visualization today is so much more than creating a 3D image and saving a secondary capture to the PACS," said Robert Taylor, Ph.D., TeraRecon president and chief operating officer. "Today, advanced visualization has to participate in the workflow of the enterprise, in a manner that allows solutions to be scaled up from one hospital to several, and then beyond to the many affiliated hospitals and imaging providers that can benefit from centralized administration and provision of advanced visualization services. At SIIM this year, TeraRecon is demonstrating architectural features of the Aquarius iNtuition product suite that support high availability and high scalability for diverse distributed enterprises, supported by a full range of world-class advanced visualization clinical applications implemented in a fully client-server form. Beyond this, TeraRecon is fully committed to participating in the development of true structured workflow for advanced visualization so that it may be fully integrated into the operations of the multi-dimensional imaging practice of tomorrow."
