TerraTherm, Inc. Wins Award for Breakthrough Thermal Remediation Project Combining Conduction and Steam Technologies in Denmark


FITCHBURG, MA--(Marketwire - February 17, 2009) - TerraTherm, a leading provider of in situ thermal remediation (ISTR) technologies and services, has been awarded a 2008 Project Merit Award for Remediation for successful completion of the world's first project combining Thermal Conduction Heating (TCH) and Steam Enhanced Extraction (SEE) by the Environmental Business Journal (EBJ). The EBJ noted that the project addressed numerous complexities, including execution in very tight spaces within and beneath a working dry cleaning facility, which remained in operation throughout, as well as close proximity to urban infrastructure such as gas, sewer and electrical lines. The Danish consultant NIRAS, Danish contractor Arkil A/S and TerraTherm's Scandinavian licensee Kruger A/S, a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, collaborated with TerraTherm on both design and direction.

Underlying geology and hydrology challenges were also overcome to recover significant dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL), which threatened the municipal water supply of Odense, Denmark's third largest city. "TerraTherm has made an important contribution to the protection of critical resources for Odense, which is a vibrant cultural and technological center in the heart of Southern Denmark," observed Hans Skou, project manager for the Southern Region of Denmark, the client.

Perchloroethene (PCE) DNAPLs had migrated through 11 m (35 feet) of clay till into a high-yielding sandy groundwater aquifer, to a treatment depth of 14 m (46 feet). The identified remedial goal, which called for removal of 800 kilograms of PCE to reduce concentrations to 10 mg/kg or below, was far exceeded by the actual results, which recovered more than 4000 kilograms of contamination, representing a removal efficiency of 99.75%. This was accomplished in 4.5 months, with completion 45 days ahead of schedule.
