This Canada-Day long weekend the annual Toronto Ribfest will launch an ambitious challenge -- the eradication of child hunger in Toronto.

Toronto's largest charity event and the largest Canada Day weekend celebration in southwestern Ontario, will emphasize the "fest" portion of Ribfest this year by adding a world-class haunted theatre (run by at-risk youth and masters of terror) and several high-calibre local musical acts.

Presented by Schneiders Country Naturals, and created and organized by the Rotary Club of Etobicoke, Toronto Ribfest, to be held in Centennial Park, is going to be the meat-lover's culinary event of the year. 150,000 attendees will watch in awe as 13 of the best BBQ masters in the land (12 teams from Ontario) compete for bragging rights for the "best ribs".

* DON'T' FEAR THE DARKNESS…FEAR WHAT LIES WITHIN IT! - This year will feature a terrifying mobile haunted theatre called CarnEvil Manor from the masters behind The Powerhouse of Terror, and the PACT-Haunted-Theatre (a new LifeSkills project that teaches at-risk youth how to design, create and run a professional haunted house operation). This Manor has deep seeded secrets, which you may uncover during your visit and challenge your perception of what is real.

* TWO STAGES / FOUR DAYS OF GREAT MUSIC - This year has a greater focus on music than previous years. Two stages of entertainment will feature bands such as Much Music Video award nominee, Neverest and perennial favourites The Kings as well Dr. Draw, Mason Dixon, a Rock Tribute Band Day on Saturday and a Sunday Blues Rock Day.

TORONTO FOOD INITIATIVE - In addition to the many charities supported each year, this year Toronto Ribfest will embrace The Toronto Food Initiative, a community-based collaboration among the PACT Urban Peace Program, Rotary and the TDSB who all share the common goals of ending hunger, educating youth about food security and providing programs for those in most need. Starting out in 2009 as PACT Grow to Learn, the Toronto Food Initiative has grown to include 100,000 square feet of schoolyard gardens. It keeps over-a-thousand students active, working the gardens, growing produce and delivering over 40,000 pounds of organic vegetables for Toronto food banks.

Additionally, all donations at the gate will fund vital breakfast and lunch programs for Toronto students -- another crucial element in the fight against hunger.

"No other organization has done as much to eradicate Polio from the world than Rotary with its Polio Plus initiative, the most ambitious program in Rotary's history," said Hugh Williams, Co-chair and Secretary, Toronto Ribfest. "Certainly, if we can eradicate Polio from the planet, we can end child hunger in our own city. People are being asked for a small donation of $2 or more at the door help make that happen."

* Ribs are only part of the experience. The masters will be wheeling out the finest pulled pork, baked beans and freshly squeezed lemonade imaginable. As well as beer -- Ribfest is a licensed event by the LLBO.
* Citizenship ceremony for new Canadians
* Children's area with face painting, clowns, and magicians as well as a expanded midway and carnival
* Massive Canada Day evening of fireworks provided by the City of Toronto.
* Free Admission (Everyone will be asked for a small donation of $2 or more at the door to help eradicate child hunger.)
