CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 27, 2012) - Alberta Venture magazine has named Tervita Corporation president and chief executive officer John Gibson as one of Alberta's 50 "Most Influential People".
Alberta Venture recognizes every year 50 individuals in the province who have shaped public actions, views and opinions on important subject matter such as business, politics, education and the environment.
"My success has been influenced by those around me, so it is very humbling to be recognized with this prestigious award," said Gibson. "Since coming to Alberta from Texas, I have noticed that the business culture here is very inclusive and welcoming and I continue to be inspired by other great leaders in this province."
Gibson has championed an aggressive growth and diversification strategy since he joined Tervita in 2010. In March 2012, he led the unification of more than a dozen business units under the name Tervita to create a dynamic new brand committed to sustaining the life, health and energy of the planet by supporting responsible resource development.
"Two years ago, we saw a need to build one unified company, to bring all our business units together and become the industry leader in energy and environmental solutions," said David P. Werklund, Tervita's chairman and founder. "We saw in John the perfect person to lead the company through an unprecedented period of growth and change. Since he joined, John has built a leadership team that is truly second to none, overseen the company's rebranding and grown the company by a few thousand employees. It is this type of leadership and vision that has made Tervita a global leader in its field."
"Tervita and John Gibson have accomplished in a matter of months what it would take many companies years to do. This is why he is one of Alberta Venture's 50 most influential people," said Michael Ganley, Alberta Venture editor. "It is no simple feat to merge even two companies, and Mr. Gibson has done it with more than 12. Tervita is now Alberta's largest energy services company with 4,600 employees and more than $5 billion in annual revenues."
Under John's leadership, Tervita will continue to focus and integrate its extensive services and capabilities, providing industry leading energy and environmental services across North America.
"We have an obligation as an industry to provide affordable energy, but we can't do it at the expense of the environment and the communities where we live," said Gibson. "Tervita helps our partners and customers mitigate the risks of oil and gas activity to reach and exceed environmental goals."
Gibson has previously served as CEO of an enterprise software solutions company serving oil and gas industry clients and has held senior positions with the Halliburton Group of Companies, most recently as president of Halliburton's Energy Services Group. Gibson serves on the Board of Directors for Tervita Corporation, Orocobre Limited, Blue Spark Energy Inc., and I-Pulse Inc. He is a member of the University of Houston Energy Advisory Committee, the Houston Baptist University Board of Trustees, and is a director of the National KICKSTART Program. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Auburn University and a Master of Science from the University of Houston.
Mr. Werklund was also a recipient of this honour in 2006.
