Tervita Congratulates Associated Engineering for National Environmental Award

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Oct. 25, 2012) - Tervita Corporation congratulates Associated Engineering for winning the 2012 Canadian Consulting Engineer Award of Excellence in the Environmental Remediation category for the Burnaby Lake Rejuvenation Project, at a ceremony this week in Ottawa, Ontario.

Tervita collaborated with Associated Engineering on the project and conducted the dredging and sediment removal of Burnaby Lake, which included the removal of more than 222,400 tonnes of garbage, debris, sands, silts, clays and decomposed organic material. After 21 months of work, the project resulted in the restoration and preservation of this urban lake ecosystem.

The Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards are given annually by Canadian Consulting magazine to projects that demonstrate a high quality of engineering, imagination, innovation and positive contributions to society.

This restoration project improved the lake's depth and overall water quality resulting in larger open water areas, increased ability for fish passage, improved diversity of wildlife habitat and continued use of the lake as an international rowing venue.

More than 400 plants and birds, including various endangered species, live around Burnaby Lake, which is one of the few remaining bodies of fresh water within the Greater Vancouver area with such a diverse biosphere.

If the Tervita dredging had not taken place, the sediment would likely have slowly created wetlands and mud flats, changing the ecosystems and thereby reducing the diversity of the current wildlife. The removed sediment will, in time, be used to construct sports fields.

The Burnaby Lake Rowing Club and Burnaby Lake Kayak and Canoe Club have been using the rejuvenated lake since the project was completed in April 2011.

Tervita has been honoured with two awards for the Burnaby Lake Rejuvenation Project: Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia, 2012 Environmental Award, Design Construction and Monitoring category; and the Environmental Manager's Association of British Columbia 2012 Environmental Management Award, Site Remediation category.
