Tesora Open Sources Its Leading Database Virtualization Engine Technology

Tesora to Offer a Free Open Source Community Edition and a Commercial Enterprise Edition With Additional Functionality With 24/7 Support

CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwired - Jun 10, 2014) - Tesora™, provider of an open and scalable database as a service (DBaaS) platform on OpenStack, today announced that the source code of company's previously proprietary database virtualization engine would be made freely available. The Tesora™ Database Virtualization Engine® (DVE) version 1.6 will now be available as a Community and an Enterprise Edition. The Community Edition will be available for download from the company's website. The Enterprise Edition will offer the addition of 24/7 support, a web-based user interface and installable packaging for Ubuntu, Linux and Red Hat.

Tesora's Database Virtualization Engine seamlessly supports workloads that exceed the capabilities of a single database server, while only provisioning, consuming and paying for the capacity that you need at any given instant. In a recent customer deployment, Tesora's DVE was shown to provide an 80-fold capacity increase in performance of mobile applications and a dramatic reduction in costs.

"Now that our database virtualization engine is open source, any organization can take advantage of our scale-out technology simply by downloading the code and trying it themselves," said Ken Rugg, CEO and Founder of Tesora. "We think this is the right strategy to foster innovation in the MySQL community and around OpenStack and Trove. We've learned over the past couple of years that developers much prefer open source technology and we are excited to be able to release the code."

Tesora's motivation for open sourcing the company's DVE is to encourage broader, and easier, adoption of their database virtualization engine technology. The open sourcing of Tesora's DVE has allowed Tesora to cement the company's ties to its partners in the MySQL community including Percona, the oldest and largest independent MySQL support, consulting, managed services, training and software development provider. This is also more consistent with Tesora's commitment to the open source DBaaS project, Trove, which was recently released as part of the OpenStack Icehouse release.

"We applaud Tesora's decision to open source their Database Virtualization Engine," said Peter Zaitsev, CEO and Co-founder of Percona. "The Tesora DVE's scalability is impressive. In our recent testing of the product, complex transactions spanning multiple nodes scaled better than linear and simple reads. Writes scaled even better. Now that it's open source, it will be much easier for organizations that can benefit from this technology to test and deploy it."
