Texas Education Agency Commends Lamar University's Master's Program in Principal Education

M.Ed. in Educational Leadership Offered On Campus and Online

BEAUMONT, TX--(Marketwire - March 22, 2010) -  Texas Education Agency (TEA) evaluators commended Lamar University earlier this month for the quality of its curriculum following a technical assistance visit to review the University's master's level principal education program. The evaluators' final report found Lamar in compliance with each of the five areas of review.

The TEA evaluated these five primary areas: commitment and collaboration, admission criteria, curriculum, program delivery and on-going support, and program evaluation. In the area of "curriculum," the TEA team issued the following commendation: "Lamar University's Principal Program is to be commended for providing a comprehensive, research-based instructional program. It is technically appropriate for distance learning."

Graduate students enrolled in the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership program participate in the program either on campus or via online distance learning through the University's partnership with service provider Higher Ed Holdings.

The review process began last year with a self-study prepared by the University. During the TEA site visit, the team reviewed documents, student records, handbooks, guidelines and more. Team members surveyed program students, staff, administrators, faculty, and principals of campuses where candidates were assigned. The TEA team also completed comprehensive curriculum review and surveyed members of the program's external advisory committee.

Hollis Lowry-Moore, Dean of Lamar University's College of Education and Human Development, said, "This outcome is very positive for us. It affirms that we are in compliance with state standards for master's degrees in educational administration. It also provides us with some good recommendations for areas we can improve. Specifically, one is the need to clarify some language on our internships and field supervisors for our principal candidates. It also recommended expanding our advisory board. We will be working in both of those areas."
