The 2008 Ontario Summer Games Cap Off Record Setting Tournament in Ottawa

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 16, 2008) - Saturday marked the final day of the Ontario Summer Games with a total of 671 Gold medals awarded to athletes from across the province.

Over 1000 volunteers ensured the Games were a success by volunteering their time and energy to support athletes by organizing everything from the athlete's villages to sport venues.

On the last day of competition, Pat Reid, Director General of the 2008 Ontario Summer Games, said: "With the addition of swimming, water polo, lawn bowling, and triathlon, the expanded summer Games were an outstanding success. From the colorful opening ceremonies, to the gold medal finals in basketball on Saturday afternoon, the multi-sport tournament provided entertainment and excitement for athletes, parents, volunteers, and the community as a whole."

"The Ontario Summer Games are a celebration of our athletes and of their hard work, dedication and strength," said Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion. "Ontario's athletes are role models for all of us and I take pride in congratulating each and every one of them."

The Ontario Summer Games will next be held in the City of Greater Sudbury in 2010. Co-chairs of the 2010 Sudbury Games, Dan Lee and John Roberts, are looking forward to hosting the event for the first time in Sudbury's history. "We are confident that Sudbury's dedicated volunteers will come out and deliver a summer Games as fantastic as Ottawa's this year," said Co-chair Dan Lee.

"As a proud Sudburian I am very excited to hear that the Sport Alliance of Ontario has awarded the 2010 Games to our city," said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci. "Hosting the largest multi sport event in Ontario will provide us with yet another way of showcasing our community and athletes to the rest of the province."
