The Art Star Craft Bazaar is an outdoor retail art/craft show that is organized & juried by Philadelphia's Art Star Gallery & Boutique (www.artstarphilly.com). Over 100 local and national artists have been chosen to set up shop & sell their wares along the beautiful waterfront @ Penn's Landing. Shoppers can expect high quality handmade goods that reflect the unique & often quirky aesthetic of Art Star, set against the backdrop of the sparkling Delaware River. Art Star has hand selected a diverse collection of artists that create anything & everything, including housewares, paper goods, dolls, prints, ceramics, clothing, accessories, paintings/drawings, sculpture, and many other one-of-a-kind curiosities. All items have been handmade from a variety of mediums that include fabric, clay, glass, wood, paper and much more.
A Little History
In 2003, Tyler School of Art grads Erin Waxman (BFA, '99) and Megan Brewster (BFA, '00) were searching for places to show and sell their work. They quickly realized that the options were few and far between. They decided to create a new venue for themselves and like-minded-artists in Philadelphia and the Art Star Craft Bazaar was conceived: an open-air market, where emerging artists & crafters could sell their wares to the public. Twenty vendors were chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis and the event was held at The First Unitarian Church over the course of a few weekends that summer. During the show, Megan and Erin met many talented artists who were all looking for viable venues for their work.
The pair opened up Art Star Gallery & Boutique in November of 2004 to help fill the void for emerging artists across the country. The Art Star Craft Bazaar continued to grow over the years and has served as an extension of the gallery.
"There are so many talented artists that we have met along the way. We wish we could show and represent all of them, but our space is limited. The Bazaar enables us to introduce even more interesting artists to the public, that we may be unable to show in the gallery due to space limitations," states Megan. The show is now juried and boasts over 100 artists annually.
Music Coordinator Jack McBrearty of bands The Mural & The Mint, and Songs for Lonesome Hearts has curated a line-up of local bands to entertain guests throughout the day. Select local eateries such as A Full Plate Café & The Soy Café will offer tasty vegetarian/vegan food amongst the standard festival pizza/hot dog faire.
This year, we will be giving out special coupon books & Art Star Craft Bazaar magnets to the first 250 people each day! The coupon book will feature discounts & give-aways at vendor booths during the event, raffle tickets, as well as an invitation to a free make & take demo at the Philadlephia Open Studio Tour/The Soapbox Booth. More surprises throughout the day can be expected, so bring the entire family! We hope to see you there!
Shoppers can expect affordable, high quality, and extremely unique goods from a variety of media. In its 8th year, The Art Star Craft Bazaar has become Philadelphia's most cutting edge craft fair & was also chosen "Best Shopping Event" by Philadelphia Magazine in 2010. Come see it for yourself!
