The Alouettes Bursary to Benefit 21 Young Athletes

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 1, 2005) - Alouettes' President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Larry Smith, will hand out a $23,000 bursary benefiting 21 Quebec student-athletes during tomorrow's pre-game President's Club ceremony.

Under the banner of the Alouettes' bursary program, the team will hand out these monies to young student athletes who excel in a recognized secondary, collegiate or university-level football program.

Proud to be involved with such a program, Mr. Larry Smith believes this will help entice the best of Quebec's young athletes to stay in the province both to study as well as to pursue a career in sports. "Our objectives are to consistently encourage these young athletes to follow their dreams and to stay in school. We believe football is one of the best ways of teaching the discipline needed to get through school and we're proud to be able to contribute in any way we can."

Last fall, the Montreal Alouettes announced a three-year $75,000 investment plan in order to get this program on its feet for 2005. Several types of bursaries will be distributed to highlight excellence in sports and in academics, for perseverance in education, and for leadership and participation in the community.

Co-directed by the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence and Football Quebec in partnership with Federation quebecoise du sport etudiant, these three federations' presidents (Claude Chagnon, Pierre Martin and Yves Paquette, in order) are all happy to have the Alouettes on board. With the province's professional team helping out, it shows today's young athletes just how far they can go with football and a solid education. They believe strongly that this involvement will allow for today's Alouettes to become role models to young athletes, creating a link to the solid future of the sport in Quebec.
