The Canada National Dance Team: Local Canadian Dancers Take on the World!

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 22, 2005) - The Canada National Dance Team will once again be representing Canada at the IDO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in RIESA, GERMANY at the Erdgas Arena Riesa an der Elbe November 22nd - December 4th, 2005.

A number of our local dancers from Southern Ontario, ages 11-20, have qualified to represent Canada in the 2005 Junior and Senior Dance Show and Tap Dance formations. In addition, some of these dancers have also qualified to compete with solos and duos in these same categories.

The IDO World Championships are hosted by the International Dance Organization, which has over 60 member nations. Dance is deemed a major sporting event in Europe and the IDO World Championships in Riesa, Germany are the height of dance competition. Drawing a standing room only crowd, the World Dance Championships are covered by both television and newspaper. Winners in all categories are presented their medals on a podium as their national anthem is played and their country's flag is raised.

At the 2003 IDO World Championships, over 4000 dancers from over 30 nations competed, with Team Canada ranked #1 in the medals race earning 11 Golds, 4 Silvers and 5 Bronze. In addition, Team Canada was the winner of the 2003 "Team of the Year" Award. This prestigious award is presented to one team only for outstanding performances as well as good sportsmanship and fostering good spirit among fellow competitors.

Local choreographer, Allain Lupien, Director of the Canadian Dance Company in Mississauga, is choreographing the Senior Dance Show formation for Team Canada. Many of the young dancers on his team train in a variety of dance disciplines for twenty to thirty hours per week in order to prepare for competition at this level.
