The Canadian Forces Concludes its Participation in Operation IOLAUS

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 13, 2007) - On Wednesday, July 11, 2007, the Canadian Forces (CF) closed out Operation IOLAUS, Canada's contribution to United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Since October 2004, Operation IOLAUS consisted of one CF senior officer who served as one of the Assistant Military Advisors (AMA or A/MILAD) for the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) leading the UNAMI mission.

As with all international operations, the CF reviews its commitments abroad on a recurring basis. After conducting a review of Operation IOLAUS, the CF recommended to the Government of Canada that the contribution to UNAMI not be renewed.

Canada remains fully committed to peace and stability in the Middle East and is a strong supporter of the Middle East Peace Process. The CF will continue to support four existing missions in the Middle East:

- Operation PROTEUS - Canada's participation in the US-led international effort to assist the Palestinian Authority to plan security sector reform following Israel's withdrawal from Gaza;

- Operation JADE - Canada's commitment to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) to observe and maintain the cease-fire between Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria;

- Operation GLADIUS - Canada's commitment to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) to supervise the implementation of the cease-fire between the Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights; and

- Operation CALUMET- Canada's contribution to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), the non-UN peacekeeping mission established to monitor compliance by Israel and Egypt with the historic Camp David Accords of 1979.
