The Chaoulli Case

Governments Must Move Immediately to Reassure Us About our Public Medicare Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, News Editor, World News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor OTTAWA--(CCNMatthews - June 9, 2005) - The Canadian Labour Congress expresses disappointment in the findings of the Supreme Court of Canada in the Chaoulli case. Canadian working families have more questions than answers with this decision in favour of Dr. Jacques Chaoulli and his patient George Zeliotis who argued that waiting for care in the provincially-insured health care system and the laws that govern care are a violation of their rights.

"All governments, federal and provincial, must move quickly to reassure Canadians that our cherished public medicare system is still in place and will be there for us all when we need it," said Ken Georgetti, president of the Canadian Labour Congress. "Canadian working families need to hear a strong reminder to all concerned that the Canada Health Act is still the law and the five principles of public medicare are still being enforced."

"We must remember also that the case entered by Dr. Chaoulli and Mr. Zeliotis dates from 1997. Since that time there have been two federal-provincial agreements on health care that have addressed most of the issues of concern to the Court including the question of waiting lists."

"In the Canadian labour movement, we will study the Court's decision carefully to see if these issues have not already been addressed and how to work to make the public system stronger and better for all Canadians."

The Canadian Labour Congress, the national voice of the labour movement, represents 3 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together Canada's national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 137 district labour councils.
