The City of Montreal Welcomes the Greek Gods

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - July 5, 2005) - The City of Montreal is pleased to support the Hellenic Community of Montreal's annual festival, The Hellenic Flame, which will be held from July 22 to 31 at the Old Port's picturesque Quai Saint-Jacques. As it does each year, the City is making a financial contribution to this event in order to offer Montrealers the chance to learn more about Greek culture in an entertaining and festive setting. The City's contribution is estimated at $30,000.

"Based on a Greek god theme, the 10-day festival will promote Greek culture's contribution to Quebec. Montreal is an inclusive and festive city. This event brings to light the metropolis' multiculturalism and international character. We are pleased to be associated with the Greek community, which is one of the most well established and dynamic communities in terms of its social, educational, cultural and economic achievements. We wish the Greek community and the organizers of The Hellenic Flame festival incredible success", said Marcel Tremblay, associate councillor to the mayor and responsible for cultural communities.

The two first festivals were attended by over 60 000 people. This year, the organizers of The Hellenic Flame are expecting over 70 000 people to attend at the end of July. Festival-goers will be able to participate in cultural, social and educational activities.

This festival is organized by one of the oldest organizations in Montreal, the Hellenic Community of Montreal, founded in 1907. The organization offers educational, social, religious, cultural and athletic programs. It manages a trilingual elementary school, day care centres, a senior citizen's home and four churches.
