The Co-operators: Will My Home Insurance Cover Me for Damage Caused by Spring Weather?

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 7, 2011) - Doesn't it feel good to have the cold, bleak days and long, subzero nights of winter behind us? During the weeks when winter turns to spring weather, the combination of snow melting and rain falling on your roof can leak into your home's foundation and do significant damage. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to protect your home from property damage; making you less likely to need to submit a home insurance claim.

Protect your home this spring with Home Insurance from The Co-operators

Home insurance claims attributed to water are reportedly increasing. It's been estimated by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation that an average of 30,000 to 40,000 water damage incidents in basements alone occur each year. Here are some useful tips that will help protect your home and decrease the likelihood of you submitting a home insurance claim: - experience a loss.

  • Visually assess the condition of you roof. Look for cracks, leaks or other wear that is visible from the inside of your home.

  • Flat roofs are more at risk for collapse due to the weight of melting snow in spring. Keep snow levels as low as possible. Consider hiring a professional.

  • Remove snow from around your homes' foundation to help avoid seepage in the basement. Have a wet vacuum on hand. Make sure your sump pump is working properly and floors drains are not covered.

  • Try to keep your attic the same temperature as outside and well ventilated to reduce the risk of overheating, which will cause the snow on the roof to melt. This has the potential to refreeze and damage the shingles or run into your home.

Home Insurance – Is what I have sufficient?

As spring approaches, carefully consider all the things you can do to protect not only your home but your loved ones and possessions. Just to be sure, call your Home insurance agent to confirm what type of home insurance you have, as some policies only cover your home and contents against fire, vandalism, theft and other types of losses. Double-check your home insurance policy to see if you are covered if your home becomes uninhabitable and you have to move out while repairs are being completed after water damage. Following the tips above, annually, can prevent your home from the risk of spring time water damage, but if your home insurance policy insures you for such losses and you have suffered through a severe storm, act quickly and contact your home insurance company.
