INDIANAPOLIS, IN--(Marketwire - Oct 25, 2012) - Dr. Carla Downing, vice president of product development at The College Network®, unveiled The AcaciAa Model, a cognitive strategy for today's learner, during the 18th Annual Sloan Consortium International Conference held in Florida earlier this month.
Downing began the research that led to her development of the AcaciAa Model while earning her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction (Instructional Technology) at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Her research is now being used to help adults redefine what it means to learn -- especially when enrolled in online and eLearning courses.
"Becoming a strong, capable learner is one of the most rewarding accomplishments any person can achieve; however, individuals must claim this for themselves," said Downing. "No matter how much we would like to believe it, no one person can make this happen for another. This does not mean that we, as learning professionals, are without valuable influence in the process. It's our responsibility to help our learners increase their thinking and learning abilities. They won't have to look far to discover the value of developing learning skills and employing cognitive strategies, but they do have to know where to find information on how to develop and effectively utilize such skills and models. Once we help them discover and develop in this area, we are then responsible to support their efforts through appropriate design and development of learning experiences."
The College Network's Comprehensive Learning Modules™, along with the Center for Learning Empowerment, are designed to help learners take control of their learning experience. The College Network does this by assisting learners in their transition away from pedagogy-based expectations to an approach that empowers them as learners based on Downing's research as well as her synthesis of the work of many others.
"The College Network is committed to providing a learning experience that is second to none," said Gary Eyler, chief executive officer of The College Network. "Dr. Downing is taking this company in a direction that will benefit our customers by helping them develop an approach to learning that serves them academically, personally, and professionally."
