The Congregation of Holy Cross Condemns all Forms of Abuse

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 1, 2010) - The Congregation of Holy Cross vigorously condemns all forms of misconduct by persons in authority that may threaten the psychological or physical integrity of minors.

"On behalf of all religious and lay people who work with the Congregation of Holy Cross and its charities, I wish to express our profound compassion and our most sincere apologies for the suffering caused by those who have abused their position of trust and authority. These acts should never have occurred," said Jean-Pierre Aumont, CSC, Canadian Provincial Superior of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Because it wants to ensure that full light is shed on any such events, the Congregation reaffirms to the authorities its availability and full cooperation.

Moreover, the Congregation categorically denies that out of court settlements were used to protect those responsible of misconducts. To the contrary, these settlements were reached solely to compensate the victims for the damages they have suffered.

"We have concluded out of court settlements with some victims only to compensate their suffering, to the extent possible. These agreements were never meant to protect those responsible for such reprehensible acts," said Jean-Pierre Aumont, CSC, Canadian Provincial Superior of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Moreover, the Congregation and Collège Notre-Dame have made available professional psychological assistance to any student of Collège Notre-Dame who may have been victims of misconducts. Any such individuals are invited to contact this fully confidential hotline by dialing the following number: 1-800-361-4858.

As a motion to authorize the filing of a class action was filed with the Superior Court of Quebec by René Cornellier Jr.'s succession, the Congregation of Holy Cross wishes to respect the integrity of the judicial process and will make no further comments.
