The EDGE Second Annual Business Community Summit Attracts Influencers

A Hotel in Downtown San Mateo, More Parking & Additional Transportation Options Top the List of Enhancements Needed to Further Accelerate Economic Growth on Peninsula

SAN MATEO, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 18, 2011) - Topping the list of enhancements needed to help accelerate further business growth and attract even more young entrepreneurial companies of all kinds to the mid-Peninsula region of the Bay Area -- a full service hotel in downtown San Mateo, more parking and additional, more conveniently connected transportation.

These were among the top take-aways that bubbled to the surface of discussions at the Second Annual Business Community Summit organized by The EDGE (www.theedgesm.org) economic development group and held at the College of San Mateo last month.

More than 50 regional business, community and academic leaders attended the event , which featured keynote speakers John Milligan, President and COO, Gilead Sciences, Inc., and Jeff Martin, the Founder and CEO of Tribal Brands. Attendees participated in an open discussion with the speakers and also in small-group brainstorm sessions.

These issues were cited as items that would help drive further economic development to a region that is increasingly seen as an attractive new destination for entrepreneurial and innovative companies of all types and sizes. Examples of companies that started here or moved into this region are YouTube, which was founded in downtown San Mateo, Gilead Sciences, Inc., the biotechnology leader headquartered in Foster City, and Virgin America, the pioneering airline based in Burlingame.

"There are highly successful, high profile entrepreneurial, innovative companies springing up in literally every corner of the mid-Peninsula and we want to ensure this trend not only continues, but accelerates," said Steve Parker, the Executive Director of The EDGE, the non-profit economic development growth enterprise of the San Mateo Area Chamber of Commerce. "This event was designed to put a bright light on all the compelling reasons entrepreneurs and industry leaders are starting and growing their innovative companies here, and to also help identify issues that cause them to pause."

Proximity to major highways, a convenient location mid-way between San Francisco and San Jose, good schools, good weather, lively downtowns, and being out from under the microscope of central Silicon Valley ranked among the top reasons entrepreneurs are increasingly locating their companies in the mid-Peninsula.
