The Fulcrum Presents Canadian University Press' 77th National Conference: ACCESS

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - Apr 9, 2014) - Canadian University Press and The Fulcrum are pleased to announce CUP's national conference, titled ACCESS, will take place in Ottawa Jan. 14-18, 2015.

CUP, the world's oldest student news service and North America's only student press cooperative, holds Canada's largest national conference designed by and for student journalists. Hundreds of journalists from coast to coast attend the event each year. In a new location each year, The Fulcrum, the independent newspaper at the University of Ottawa, will play host in 2015.

The conference will educate students about the role of the modern journalist in relation to the access they may or may not have. Whether they're privileged to have it already or are in a constant struggle to get it, access is fundamentally what journalists seek today.

ACCESS will empower student publications to become better access points to understanding for campuses across the country. Ottawa will be an excellent venue for this discussion, as it is the cradle of media access to sources of power.

In light of a change in CUP's financial circumstance since Jan. 2014 when CUP members accepted The Fulcrum's bid to host CUP's 2015 national conference, the management model of the conference has been modified. The Fulcrum requested to take on all financial responsibilities of planning the conference, including potential liabilities, in order to both retain greater autonomy over conference logistics and budgeting, and to ease the administrative requirements on CUP's National Office.

As a long-time member and a paper deeply committed to CUP's mission -- to unite, strengthen and support student press -- we are confident ACCESS will be a success and we thank The Fulcrum for the innovation and continued dedication to their peers at student newspapers across Canada.

Conference co-ordinators Andrew Hawley and Jessie Willms are long-time Fulcrum staff, both based in Ottawa. To contact them regarding sponsorship, promotions or registration, please email
