THE FUTURE OF ORTHOPAEDIC AND ARTHRITIC CARE STARTS TODAY

Sunnybrook & Women's Foundation announces its largest single donation - A $20 Million Gift from Susanne and William Holland Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor TORONTO/ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 12, 2005) - The $300 Million Campaign for Sunnybrook & Women's received a resounding endorsement today with the commitment of a gift of $20 million from Susanne and William Holland. The Holland's gift will create the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre at Sunnybrook & Women's.

According to Terry O'Sullivan, Chair of Sunnybrook & Women's Foundation, "Susanne and Bill's generosity is an inspiration. Their gift shows true leadership, addressing a very serious medical concern - orthopaedic care - and will have an immediate and lasting impact."

Mr. Holland, Chief Executive Officer of CI Financial, is concerned about the increased wait times for patients in need of hip and knee surgery. A strong supporter of the public healthcare system, Mr. Holland wants to make a tangible difference to Ontarians.

With demand for musculoskeletal care greater than ever before, the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre is taking a leadership role in managing, preventing, educating and discovering new ways of delivering the highest quality care.

"I am confident that this gift will have a major impact on wait times for joint replacements in Ontario, and that it will have a significant and long-term impact on healthcare in this province and country," says Mr. Holland. "We have the best orthopaedic physicians at Sunnybrook & Women's. We want this gift to provide some of the resources necessary to keep our doctors in Toronto and attract and train the next generation of medical leaders."

Mr. Holland's generous donation addresses three key areas of need: patient access, increased technology, and ongoing research into orthopaedic and arthritic care. With this gift and support of the Ontario government, the re-named Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre will transform itself into a centre of excellence that will:

-Increase patient access to hip and knee joint replacement surgery, significantly reducing wait times for Ontarians and tripling its volumes to more than 4,000 cases a year
-Create a centre of excellence that is unique to North America, specializing in hips and knees
-Improve patient care areas to accommodate the increasing demands of an aging population
-Expand capacity for orthopaedic research, funding an academic chair and research fellowship
-Provide the leadership, state-of-the-art equipment and the ability to continue to attract and retain medical experts to provide the best orthopaedic care in the world

"I am impressed when someone from the business community steps forward to help our healthcare system, and we are most grateful to Mr. Holland for his generosity," said Dr. John Cameron, Chief of the Musculoskeletal Program at Sunnybrook & Women's. "It is expensive to provide the best patient care, education and research but this landmark gift gives us the means to redefine excellence and truly achieve our vision of transforming healthcare."

"This gift from Susanne and Bill Holland provides a magnificent boost to the Campaign. It demonstrates that Sunnybrook & Women's provides healthcare at a world-leading standard worth investing in," said Campaign Chair George Fierheller.

Sunnybrook & Women's Orthopaedic & Arthritic campus is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and this generous gift will help ensure its success for many years to come. The Campaign for Sunnybrook & Women's is a $300 million effort to ensure the Hospital can continue to provide the best care to its patients… when it matters most.
