The Future of Window, Door Energy-Efficiency on Display at IBS Show Village Home

Cape Cod Technology Home to Showcase Hurd Ultra-R Based Products

MEDFORD, WI--(Marketwire - Feb 8, 2012) - There will be a new view on energy efficiency at the International Builders Show (IBS) in Orlando, FL in February. Visitors to the 13th annual Show Village will peer through Hurd Windows and Doors' Ultra-R products, which are said to be the future of energy performance in window and door technology.

Hurd's Ultra-R windows are considered groundbreaking because they achieve center of glass R-values that range from R-6 to an unprecedented R-20. The windows utilize advanced, Heat Mirror® coated films suspended between the glass panes of insulated glass. These films are coated with nanoscale metal particles that reflect heat back to its source and improve insulation, block UV rays, reduce noise and amplify owner comfort.

Hurd will be featured in the Cape Cod Technology Home, which will integrate all of the newest technologies available to builders today. Hurd's single-film, Krypton-filled windows will be displayed in aluminum clad wood casements and direct sets. They will be complemented throughout the home by Hurd's aluminum-clad wood swinging and sliding patio doors.

Beyond the energy performance benefits of the Ultra-R glazing, other unique features of the Hurd products on display in the Show Village include: casements that are DP50-rated directly out of the box, which is a testament to Hurd's solid construction; Hurd's distinctive simulated divided lite grilles with a unique 2" wide bar positioned in the middle -- simulating the curb appeal of a double hung window, but taking full advantage of the functional, structural and energy performance of a casement; and beautifully clad in one of Hurd's 15 standard color choices, Aspen Moss.

Hurd President and CEO Dominic Truniger said, "The Show Village builders aspire to earn the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED emerald level certification. Certainly, the latest and most environmentally sophisticated technology is required to achieve such a distinction. And Hurd is proud to be a part of the future of green building technology with our Ultra-R products, which elevate window and door energy-efficiency to peak levels of performance."

He noted that the Ultra-R technology is breaking new ground because energy efficient glazing (utilizing just low-E coatings) has reached its performance limits. For insulation purposes, even triple pane glass has severe limitations due to its significant added weight. At 33 percent lighter than triple-pane glass, Ultra-R windows can have single, double or triple sheets of the virtually weightless, suspended film to create up to four super-insulating cavities. When filled with krypton gas, these cavities can reach a center of glass insulation value (R-value) of 20. By comparison, a standard 2x6 wall insulated with fiberglass rates at R-19.
