The Government of Canada Invests in Manitoba's Small Craft Harbours

MP Bezan announces $1.8 million to maintain and improve fishing harbours across the province

HNAUSA, MANITOBA--(Marketwired - June 26, 2014) - James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that the Government of Canada is investing $1.8 million to support improvement projects at small craft harbours in Manitoba.

MP Bezan made the announcement at Hnausa Harbour, where a major repair project will soon be underway to replace the concrete approach to a timber pile wharf.

The improvements at Hnausa Harbour are part of the Government of Canada's investment of approximately $106 million in repair, construction, maintenance and dredging projects across Canada. This includes regular, annual funding and an additional $40 million over two years, as announced in Economic Action Plan 2014.

Quick Facts:

  • Fisheries and Oceans Canada undertakes harbour improvement projects in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users.
  • The Department will support major repair, construction and maintenance projects at six fishing harbours in Manitoba.
  • The Small Craft Harbours Program is responsible for over 1000 small craft harbours across Canada.
  • Small craft harbours support nearly 90% of all commercial fishing landings in Canada. In 2012, the landed value of Manitoba commercial fisheries was over $21 million.

"This Government understands that by investing in infrastructure at our small craft harbours we are also creating employment opportunities that benefit local communities and ensure the livelihood of our fishing industry. The funding announced today will maintain a network of safe and efficient harbours across Canada and contribute to continued economic growth and prosperity for Canadians."

Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans

"Manitoba's freshwater fisheries are important to local economies across the province. Investments in small craft harbours help ensure that commercial fishermen have up-to-date harbour facilities to support their activities."

James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake
