The Government of Canada Supports Atlantic Comedy Festival Society

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - April 22, 2008) - Once again this year, the Halifax Comedy Fest will provide entertainment for audiences of all ages and backgrounds thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Member of Parliament (Central Nova), on behalf of the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, today announced funding for the Atlantic Comedy Festival Society

Funding of $25,000 will help the Society organize the 2008 edition of the Halifax Comedy Fest, which is taking place from April 19 to 26.

"Presenting local, national, and international talent, the Halifax Comedy Fest has gained a strong reputation for offering high-quality programming that reflects the variety and diversity of Canadian culture," said Minister Verner. "The Government of Canada is proud to support a festival that makes diverse and innovative performances accessible to all."

"Our Government doesn't take the Halifax Comedy Fest seriously-in fact, it's quite funny," said Minister MacKay. "But we do take the arts seriously and want to ensure that Canadians and visitors to Atlantic Canada have access to art in all its forms."

"We attribute much of our success to the funding we receive from Canadian Heritage," said Fiona Kirkpatrick Parsons, Chair of the Atlantic Comedy Festival Society. "Ha! Fest offers the city, the province, and the Atlantic region an event unlike any other. The support we receive from Canadian Heritage allows us to provide a first-class vehicle to promote our own regional talent to a substantial national television audience. It also helps us attract outstanding national and international performers to Halifax and Nova Scotia."

The Atlantic Comedy Festival Society is presenting the 13th edition of the Halifax Comedy Fest. This year's Ha! Fest will include free concerts in different locations around the Halifax Regional Municipality. It will also feature audience development and outreach activities through its Just Kidding Program, which encourages young people with comic potential to carry the laughter forward.

The Government of Canada has provided this support through the Arts Presentation Canada Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
